Mechanics: Split Infinitives

An infinitive is a verb form used as a noun: "To err is human, to forgive divine." Because it becomes in effect a single unit as a noun, you should avoid splitting it with adverbs:

Wrong:

To carefully consider alternatives, we should hold a meeting.

Right:

To consider alternatives carefully, we should hold a meeting.
